Ciaran Brennan | I want to be a key player in this team

Ciaran Brennan has shared his ambitions of being recognised as a crucial player in Nelson Jardim’s Newport County side ahead of Saturday afternoon’s clash with Morecambe away from home.

The Exiles will look to make it three consecutive league wins for the first time since March 2022 following their recent 3-1 victories over Doncaster Rovers and Accrington Stanley.

Ciaran Brennan was signed from Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the season and the versatile defender shared his positive feelings about his short time so far in NP19.

“I’m loving it here, I’ve said a few times already that it feels like home here,” said Brennan.

“I’ve felt really comfortable at the back in the last few games and I would say that’s more of a natural position for me.”

The Irish international also spoke about how he feels he is settling into the philosophy Jardim is building at Newport.

“There has been a big turnaround at the club, we weren’t expecting amazing results overnight considering it’s a new manager and so many new players,” Brennan added

“As players we had to take time to learn the way Nelson wants to play but it’s coming good now.

“There’s a good mix of youth and experience in the squad.  It’s really helped that people like James Clarke and Aaron Wildig have been here for a few seasons so they know the club and could help the new players like myself.”

Brennan also reflected on his past experience in League Two and understood how unpredictable each game can be.  The defender revealed that he and the rest of the squad are taking each game as it comes to prevent any potential mistakes.

He also spoke about his time on various loan moves and how he has a much deeper connection with Newport County already because he is with the Exiles permanently.

“As a team, we need to take it game by game because anything can happen in League Two, you can comfortably beat the best team in the league in one game and then lose to the bottom of the league the next,” he continued.

“I aim to play as many games as I can and ultimately be seen as one of the key players in the team.

“I know I can get to that, I just need to keep showing the fans what I can do.

“I’ve been on a few loan moves in my career but I would say being at a club permanently has a different feeling.

“I feel like Newport is my club and that makes the results of the team mean so much more because on loan you know in the back of your mind that you’re there for a short time to improve yourself.

Finally, Brennan discussed his disappointment that the team have been unable to get their first clean sheet considering the side has conceded goals that he feels they shouldn’t have.

“Of course it’s annoying that we’ve not got a clean sheet yet, we’ve conceded some easily avoidable goals,” Brennan said.

“It’s something we’ve spoken about internally and it’s something we need to correct if we want to continue climbing the table.
