Newport County skipper Ryan Delaney praised his side’s performance after they secured an impressive 2-1 victory against league leaders Stockport County on Saturday afternoon.
Bryn Morris fired the Exiles ahead just before the break prior to a stunning effort from Shane McLoughlin - netting his fourth goal of the campaign - secured maximum points for County in an enthralling contest at Rodney Parade.
“It’s a big result for us today,” said Delaney post-match.
“It was a good performance from the lads but we can’t get too excited or over the top with the result as there’s still plenty of work to do.
“We enjoyed coming off with the win today and it shows that what we’ve been building over the last few weeks has finally come to fruition.
“I think today’s result gives us a big lift. We’ve shown over the last few weeks that we can compete against top teams in spells and we should have got a lot more results than what we have done over the course of the campaign. Today was just the final part of the straw for the 90-plus minutes that we played.
“I think having more players available now has also given us a big lift. I think having the ability to make changes and keep people fresh is a big thing for us because, over the last few weeks, our squad has been light at times.
“We’ve got high standards as a group including the management team and know we should be doing better than we’re currently doing. Today we’ve just got to take the positives and enjoy the win.”
The Exiles return to action in quick succession on Tuesday night as they make the trip to the Mazuma Stadium to face Morecambe in Sky Bet League Two.
And Delaney believes his side must be ready for another tough test in midweek.
“We’ll enjoy the win today but tomorrow the focus will solely be on Morecambe,” he added.
“It’s going to be another huge test for us because they’re going well this season. It’s another difficult task at hand but we’ve got to back ourselves in the changing room once again because we know how good we can be on our day.
“We need to turn up again on Tuesday and make sure these results occur on a regular basis, adding more consistency to our form.”
