Manager Graham Coughlan was left delighted after his side secured an emphatic 2-1 victory against Stockport County on Saturday afternoon.
A first-half strike from Bryn Morris gave the Exiles the lead before a stunning goal from Shane McLoughlin late on ensured Coughlan’s men earned maximum points against the league leaders at Rodney Parade.
“It was a really pleasing win for us,” began Coughlan.
"We more than matched Stockport today and we were fully committed and hard-working as a team.
“We don’t want to be a team that delivers just once a month or twice a month, we want to be a consistent team that can go toe-to-toe with the opposition each week.
“We want consistent results, and we want consistent performances as a club. In fairness, I think our performances have been relatively good this season. I think that in 90% of our games this season we have delivered good performances even though the results haven’t matched that in certain games.
“For us now it’s about building and kicking on as a group. We’re not going to get carried away with the result or get excited, we need to be fully focused on Tuesday with a difficult trip to Morecambe. My challenge to the players now is let’s see if we can put a string of results together.
"Overall, I thought we scored two great goals and deserved the win over the course of the 90 minutes.”
McLoughlin’s stunning strike saw the defender net his fourth goal in all competitions for County this season, and the boss was full of praise for his goalscoring talisman.
“Shane has been brilliant for us this season and what a goal it was from him, “he added.
“We knew at the start of the season that we needed to recruit a utility player like him. There are some top-quality players in the squad season and Shane McLoughlin is certainly one of them.
“The goal won’t get any accolades because we’re Newport County but if that’s not goal of the month or goal of the season even, I’ll bite my hat off.”
