Tom Davies | I think this is the right move for me at this stage of my career

Tom Davies

New recruit Tom Davies is excited to take the next step in his career after joining Newport County, believing he has found the perfect place to continue his development.

The talented Wales Under-21 international has joined the Exiles from Sky Bet Championship side Cardiff City on an 18-month deal and is eager to embrace a fresh challenge as the club's third signing of the January transfer window.

“I’m delighted to get the deal done. It’s been a long time coming, and I think this is the right move for me at this stage of my career," he said.

“I’m 21 now, so I’ve had a few loans and played a bit of first-team football, but I’m ready to push on and play as many games as I can. I feel this is the right place to do that.

“It’s a club that suits my style of play - looking to play out from the back and play attractive football. That was really appealing to me because I can use my technical ability to contribute to that. I’m just really looking forward to getting started.”

Davies, who joined Cardiff’s youth system at the age of 14, has gained valuable first-team experience during loan spells, most notably at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock.

His impressive performances north of the border helped catch the eye of the Bluebirds, who rewarded him with a further contract extension in the summer of 2024.

He has also represented Wales at youth level, featuring for the U21s in November against Czech Republic, and hopes his experiences with both international and loan sides will help him settle into League Two football at Rodney Parade.

“It’s been brilliant. Playing in the Scottish Premiership last season was a real learning curve. It’s such a physical league, and even just training every day taught me a lot," Davies added.

“With the Wales Under-21s, it’s been a different challenge. Moving from the physicality of the Scottish Premiership to a style where it’s all about playing out from the back and keeping the ball on the ground suits me perfectly.

“That’s my style of play, and it’s where I feel I can show my capabilities on the ball. I’ve had some great experiences and really enjoyed them.”

Having made his competitive debut for City's first team in August 2021 during a Carabao Cup clash against Sutton United, Davies is regarded as a highly-rated talent.

Known for his technical ability, intelligence on the ball, and versatility, he can play in both defensive and attacking roles, making him a valuable addition to County’s squad.

Although a natural left-back, Davies is also comfortable in midfield and even at centre-back.

Describing his playing style, he continued: “I’d say my technical ability is a big part of my game, and I can play in a few different positions.

“I grew up as a midfielder and was signed by Cardiff in that role. I played there for a few years before being moved to left-back because I’m naturally left-footed.

“I’d say I’ve got good delivery and a strong left foot. Over the last couple of years, I’ve worked a lot on my defensive game - things like 1v1 defending and heading - especially after transitioning from midfield to defence.

“Playing centre-half this year has helped me improve even further. I feel like I’ve come on leaps and bounds defensively, and I’m excited to show that here.”
