Newport County complete signing of Tom Davies

Tom Davies

Newport County is delighted to announce the permanent signing of defender Tom Davies from Cardiff City.

The Wales Under-21 international joins the Exiles on an 18-month deal to bolster Nelson Jardim's defensive options for the remainder of the campaign.

Davies, a left back, who is also capable of playing in midfield, has been with the Bluebirds since joining their academy set-up at the age of 14, steadily rising through the ranks and earning his first professional contract in 2021.

A highly rated talent, Davies made his competitive debut for Cardiff’s first team in August 2021 during a Carabao Cup clash against Sutton United.

Known for his technical ability, intelligence on the ball, and versatility, he is equally adept in both defensive and attacking roles, making him an exciting addition to County’s squad.

During the 2023-24 season, Davies gained valuable first-team experience while on loan at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock. His performances in Scotland provided further evidence of his potential, earning him recognition from Cardiff, who rewarded him with a new contract in the summer of 2024.

Davies has also represented Wales at youth level, featuring for the U18s in a 2021 friendly against England.

More recently, in October 2023, he was called up to the Wales U21 squad for their UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying match against the Czech Republic, where he further caught the eye of Wales Under-21 manager Matty Jones.

“I’m delighted to get the deal done, it’s been a long time coming,” he said after joining the Exiles.

“I think it’s the right move for me now at this stage of my career. I’ve had a few loans previously and have had a taste for first team football but I’m now ready to kick on and play as many first team games as I can.”
