Newport County complete signing of Anthony Glennon

Newport County is delighted to announce the signing of defender Anthony Glennon, subject to international clearance and EFL approval.

The left-back joins the Exiles on a two-year deal after featuring 46 times for Grimsby Town in the league since joining the Mariners on a permanent basis in 2022.

Glennon started his football career playing for local youth side Croxteth Park, alongside current England international, Trent Alexander Arnold. He joined Liverpool’s academy at the age of six and spent over a decade with the Reds, progressing through the youth levels to the under-18 squad under Neil Critchley.

Following his release from Anfield, Glennon moved on to sign for Premier League side Burnley in July 2018, and was appointed the club’s under 23s captain shortly upon his arrival to Turf Moor.

In July 2019, the 24-year-old signed a two-year extended contract with an option of a further year with the Clarets following an impressive first season in the under-23 squad, as well as being named on the first team bench for their clash with Manchester City in April of that season.

In the final year of his contract at Burnley, Glennon spent time on loan at Grimsby Town and Barrow in League Two before signing a permanent two-year deal with the Mariners in June 2022.

After putting pen-to-paper with the Exiles, Glennon said: “I’m delighted to get going. It’s a deal that’s been in the making for a long time.

“I spoke with Huw and It was something that I was interested in right from the start, and I’m just buzzing that the deal is over the line now.

“I want to play every game, get into good form and hopefully help the team have a good season.

"Every time I’ve played at Rodney Parade I’ve really enjoyed it. The atmosphere is great and I can’t wait to get going.”

Welcome to Newport County, Anthony!
