Michael Spellman signs for Newport County

Newport County is pleased to announce the signing of winger, Michael Spellman, subject to international clearance.

The former Sunderland Under-23’s player has put pen to paper on a contract through to the summer of 2026, and will add pace and athleticism to the Exiles’ attacking ranks.

A wide man with a strong threat to goal, the 21-year-old came through the well-acclaimed Park View Academy in the North East after featuring for Newcastle United as a school-boy.

Following a successful trial with Sunderland in June 2022, Spellman signed a one-year deal with the Black Cats, with an option of a further year which was activated last summer.

The young winger scored one goal and assisted four in eight Premier League 2 games in his debut season in Wearside, and also made his first-team debut against Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup First Round in the same season.

During his time at The Stadium of Light, Spellman also gained valuable experience out on loan, first with Whitby Town in the NPL Premier Division, and later with Blyth Spartans in the National League North.

“I’m delighted to get the deal over the line,” said Spellman.

“I can’t wait to get started. The club is on the rise and it wants to play good football which is what I’m all about.

“I’m really excited to play in front of the fans.”

Welcome to Newport County, Michael!
