Matt Baker is looking forward to life as a full-time Exile after he completed his move from Stoke City today.

The Welsh under-21 international has put pen to paper on a two-year deal after both clubs reached a compensation agreement.

And following two separate loan spells with County, he is delighted to seal his permanent switch to Rodney Parade.

“I’m really happy to be back here at the club, this time on a permanent basis”, said Baker.

“To be back playing here in front of these fans is exciting and I can’t wait to get started .

“Being here on a permanent basis now gives me a chance to build on last season.

“The last two seasons I’ve been here I’ve gained a lot of experience, and It’s certainly gave me the opportunity to kick-on and move forward in my career.”

Alongside his club duties with the Exiles last season, Baker enjoyed a successful spell with Wales under-21s.

The 21-year-old featured in all of Matty Jones' side’s European Qualifiers helping them edge closer to qualification, before earning a first senior call-up to the National squad in June.

And the defender admits his experience of playing regular first team football has played a huge part in his development.

“I think playing first team football here at Newport has helped my development” added Baker. “As a young player it’s what you need to improve your game.

“I want to play at the highest level, and to do that you need find a permanent home and a club where you can play regularly.

“Being here with Huw and what he plans to do with the club really suits me. The style of football that he wants to implement here at the club going forward too really excites me.

“Last season, there were a lot of highs and a lot of lows, but there’s a lot of things we can build on and learn from.

“Hopefully, we can try and use that experience to get promoted this year.”
