Newport County’s first loan signing of the season, Kieron Evans, is looking forward to making his mark in league football on a regular basis after the short switch from neighbouring Cardiff City.
The 22-year-old signed a season-long loan deal at Rodney Parade and met his new teammates at training this morning ahead of Saturday’s League Two clash at home to Accrington Stanley (3pm).
Having enjoyed loan spells at Linfield, Torquay and Gateshead over the last two years, Evans believes a move to Newport County and League Two is the right step for him in a career that has already earned him plenty of plaudits.
“I needed to play league football this season to continue my development,’’ declared Evans, who scored for Gateshead at Wembley in their penalty shoot-out triumph against Solihull in the FA Trophy final last season.
“I had several offers from Football League clubs, but I felt Newport County was the right move for me, especially as I am only living in nearby St Mellons.
“More importantly though, I believe the style of football will suit my game. It’s a different philosophy from last season and I am really excited about trying to make my mark.’’
Evans, who has been with Cardiff for the last 12 years, is looking forward to meeting up again with former Bluebird Cameron Antwi and trying to establish himself as a regular in Nelson Jardim’s young side.
A creative and attacking player, Evans feels he can play anywhere across the midfield or the front-line, and featured for the Bluebirds in their Carabao Cup win over Bristol Rovers earlier this month.
“Firstly, I will be looking for an opportunity to play,’’ added the former Wales Under-20 international. “Then I want to try and help the team finish as high as possible with goals and assists.’’
