Coach Joe Flurry praised the professionalism and mindset of his players after watching Newport County Under-18s advance to the second round of the FAW Youth Cup with a 5-1 victory over AFC Llwydcoed.
A brace from Corey Evans and Declan Rowsell set the young Exiles on their way before Jac Norris rounded off a comprehensive win for the young Exiles at the USW Sport Park.
“I’m really pleased with the result, first and foremost,” said Flurry, who was appointed as the new under-18s Lead PDP coach earlier this month.
“We approached the game to win it, but to win it in our way with our style.
“I think you saw that very well, especially in the second-half where we controlled possession and created numerous chances.
“Today we were up against a difficult opposition. They defended really well and made it difficult for us at times.
“They sat in quite deep and we had to show a lot of character, but full credit to the boys in the end.
“We scored five really good goals and credit to the players. It was a good performance today and we’re all delighted to progress in the competition.
“He added: “We’ve got a great group of players here at the academy, who work really hard day in day out.
“They’re a great group to be around and credit to them. We approach every game with the same professional mentality and the anger to win.
“Our focus now is just to keep building and taking that winning momentum into the upcoming matches.”
