Match Preview | Colchester United (H)

After coming up short in our last game at Rodney Parade, Newport will look to make the stadium a fortress once again with a win over Colchester United tonight.

The Exiles were on the end of a difficult 2-1 defeat to Salford City last weekend, dominating large portions of the game and being denied several excellent chances.

The team will feel buoyed by the performance, though, with Graham Coughlan keen to note his player’s efforts in his post-match interview.

Opposition Form

Colchester United will arrive at Rodney Parade after securing a nail-biting 5-4 win over early pace-setters Notts County at home this past Saturday. The U’s took the lead several times throughout the game, with County fighting right until the death, scoring their fourth in the 92nd minute and setting up a tense finale.

The team have had mixed fortunes in their opening nine games, and they currently find themselves in 18th place, one position beneath us in the league table. They have only picked up three points on the road so far this campaign, a surprisingly dominant 3-0 victory away at Gillingham. Every other game has ended in defeat.

Last Time Out

Our last encounter with Colchester United was not a particularly memorable one. We travelled to Essex on April 1st this year, with the game ending 0-0. With just seven games to go for the campaign, Colchester were battling relegation, with their draw against us seeing them go three points clear of the drop.

Despite the scoreline, there were plenty of chances registered, with Will Evans having our best chance to nick the win late in the game.

Head to Head

Our record with Colchester United dates all the way back to the 16th of September, 1950, when we recorded a 2-0 home win against The U’s. Since then, we have played each other 60 times in competitive league and cup encounters. Colchester’s return to League Two in 2016 ensured their place as regulars on our fixture calendar, and we have played each other every season since. In total, they have defeated us 26 times, with us beating them on 18 occasions. Sixteen games have ended in a draw.

Played for Both

Despite both of our continued presence in League Two, there are very few players that have lined up for both Colchester United and Newport County. One of the most notable players to do so in recent years is Frank Nouble.

Nouble spent a season with us in 2017/18, scoring nine times in 45 appearances. The experienced striker, who now plays for Yeovil Town, has had several spells in Essex. The most lucrative of these was after he left us. He would go on to make 79 appearances for the club, scoring 14 times.

Other players to have taken to the field for both teams include Alex Gilbey, who had a very short loan spell with us in 2013 from Colchester, and Courtney Senior, who failed to make an impact at Rodney Parade after playing 124 times for Colchester.
