Newport County sign warrior Ryan Delaney

Newport County’s League Two campaign received a major boost today with the capture of experienced defender Ryan Delaney from Morecambe, subject to EFL approval.

Delaney, 26, joins Graham Coughlan’s squad after a lengthy pursuit by the Newport boss.

The former Republic of Ireland U21 international has a wealth of experience at both centre-half and left-back.

Having started his career at his home-town club Wexford in the League of Ireland, he was snapped up by Championship club Burton Albion in 2016. After a loan spell back in Ireland with Cork City, Delaney returned to the EFL with Rochdale, AFC Wimbledon (loan) and Bolton before signing a two-year contract with League One side Morecombe in 2021.

“It’s been a long chase trying to get Ryan to Newport,’’ explained Coughlan. “Although I knew we had to be patient, I didn’t think it was going to happen, so I’m delighted we’ve finally got our man.

“I’m sure the wait will be worth it because he’s what I call a proper leader who will fit our dressing room.

“He's a warrior and a winner.’’

Delaney was also pleased to make the switch to Rodney Parade, declaring: “It really felt like the right move for me and I’m keen to add my strengths to the team.

“I’m excited to get amongst the lads and see how we can complement each other to bring the best out of the team.’’

Newport County AFC would like to place on record their thanks Rob Santwris and all those who have organised and kindly donated to the ‘supporters players fund’ for their incredible support. Your kindness and generosity does not go unnoticed.
