MATCH REPORT: Carlisle United 2-0 Newport County

County were defeated on the road at Carlisle United as our four-match unbeaten run came to an end at Brunton Park.

Despite having much of the better play in the first half, Newport fell behind in first-half stoppage time when Carlisle's top scorer Kristian Dennis found the net on the stroke of half-time.

Carlisle debutant John-Kymani doubled the hosts' advantange 11 minutes after the restart and the lead was unassailable for the Cumbrians.

County almost took the lead as soon as the game got underway, but Lewis Collins was unfortunate to shoot wide of the post on the two-minute mark.

After Will Evans pressed Carlisle keeper Tomas Holy, the lanky stopper hit a panicked clearance straight to Offrande Zanzala. Under pressure from defenders, Zanzala eventually picked out Collins with his effort just off target.

Evans himself went close soon after, but he could only head Adam Lewis' cross from the left over the bar.

Priestley Farquharson suffered a similar fate, as just past the quarter-hour mark, he headed a right-sided cross from fellow centre back Mickey Demetriou wide of the goal.

Zanzala then tested Holy who needed to make a smart stop to deny Zanzala who skipped past a Carlisle defender before seeing his shot from a tight angle kept out.

Adam Lewis was the next to have a go, although his curled attempt from 20 yards lacked power and was secured by Holy with little bother.

A promising County move would then end with Evans' pop going straight to Holy who caught it and all of Newport's impressive first-half work would be undone.

Dennis, the league's third-top scorer, found some space in the County area and finished from close range in off the left post for 1-0 on the cusp of half-time.

A half-chance for both sides opened up the first half, with Adam Lewis' cross-shot free-kick from the right being grabbed by Holy while a Carlisle set-piece was well kept out by Joe Day after a corner from the left took a nick off a Newport body that was goalbound.

Gordon made it 2-0 to the Cumbrians though with a smart finish from the left of the area after jinking into the area.

Owen Moxon was denied by Day with just over quarter of an hour to go, as the shot from just outside the area was down the throat of the County keeper who had no trouble keeping it out.

County almost got themselves back into the contest in impressive fashion, but Cameron Norman lashed over the bar from an acute angle after a dainty flick past a defender.

Evans also came close to scoring a goal of the season contender as his swerving shot from range looked to cause trouble, however it went just wide of the right post.

Carlisle almost made it 3-0 10 minutes from time as Day had to make a great save with his feet to keep out Jack Armer's effort from inside the area that looked to be a nailed-on goal before Day's heroics.

Jordan Gibson was also a whisker away from extending Carlisle's margin of victory but he was denied by the woodwork with his side-footed strike from the left of the area.

Newport would hit the post themselves though as a ball from the right was headed against the far post by Adam Lewis who marauded into the box to meet the delivery.
