Match Preview | Sutton United (A)

After back-to-back home games over the festive period, Newport start 2024 with a trip to London against Sutton United.

Adam Lewis continued his road to recovery by starting on the bench against Crewe, and the defender will look to grab more minutes at Gander Green Lane.

Opposition Form

It has been an extremely difficult first half of the season for Sutton. After 23 games, they are second from bottom of the table on 17 points, six points from safety.

They have won just one of their last six games, a 1-0 away win at Wimbledon on Boxing Day, losing three and drawing two.

Gander Green Lane has not been the kindest of venues for them this season, with their last win on home soil coming on October 28th, a 2-1 win over Bradford. They have only won two games there this season.

In terms of selection, Jason Goodliffe has no fresh injury concerns, but the team will be without its leading scorer, Harry Smith, who picked up a suspension in their 1-0 loss away at Gillingham earlier this week. Coincidentally, Smith also received a red card and missed our previous game in August.

Last Time Out

We last encountered Sutton United at the end of August, pulling off an exciting comeback win that continued our strong start to the campaign at home.

After falling behind against the run of play, we equalised with less than 20 minutes on the clock thanks to an own goal. Goals from Will Evans and Harry Charsley, both continuing their strong early-season form, were enough to ensure a comfortable 3-1 win.

Head to Head

Compared to most teams in the league, we have a limited history with Sutton United. We have played each other five times, winning twice, losing twice, and drawing once. Our last win came when they visited Rodney Parade earlier this season.

Played for Both

There have not been too many players that have swapped South Wales and Rodney Parade for South London and Gander Green Lane over the years.

One of the most notable is Ryan Jackson. The 33 year old has been a regular in the Sutton team this season. He played for us in our first season back in the Football League, making his debut in our iconic 3-1 League Cup win at Brighton.
