Match Preview | Forest Green Rovers

Newport look to return to winning ways this Tuesday as we welcome Forest Green Rovers to Rodney Parade for our second game in four days.

Graham Coughlan made two changes to our starting line-up this weekend against Wrexham, with Will Evans and Harry Charsley both returning to the starting XI. The gaffer is monitoring the fitness of several players as he looks to continue an unbeaten home league run that extends back to October 7th.

Manager’s Comments

Graham Coughlan will be looking for a response from his players after a 2-0 defeat on the road to Wrexham on Saturday afternoon.

“We’ll have to re-group and go again tomorrow, it’s as simple as that,” began Coughlan.

“We trained yesterday to prepare the best we can for Forest Green Rovers. It’s the next game. We’ve worked on digesting the Wrexham game and now all focus is on Boxing day.

"It’s going to be another tough test and we must be ready.” Coughlan concluded.

Opposition Form

It is fair to say this season has not gone as planned for Forest Green Rovers. After relegation from League One last year, the team has failed to soften its fall into League Two, finding itself second bottom of the league after 21 games.

Troy Deeney was handed the reigns last week and made his debut in the dugout with a 0-0 draw against Gillingham. He will look to grab his first win at Rodney Parade, with Rovers winless in the league since the end of October, when they won 2-1 against Crawley Town.

You have to go all the way back to the start of September to find their last away win, a 1-0 win away at Sutton United. Since then, they have only picked up one point on the road, a 0-0 draw away at Walsall.

Deeney went with Matty Stevens, Callum Morton, and Kyle McCalister in attack against Gillingham and is likely to go the same way when they visit South Wales.

Last Time Out

Tuesday’s match is our first reverse fixture of the season, and fans will remember our earlier encounter with our nearby rivals fondly. A goal in the 13th second from Will Evans set the tone for a dominant performance, with Evans completing his brace before half-time and Adam Lewis making it three from the penalty spot late in the day. You can revisit that game with our new Season Rewind feature.

Head to Head

Tuesday’s game will be the 25th encounter between Newport County and Forest Green. In the 24 previous encounters, Forest Green have won eight, while we have seven, and nine games have ended in a draw.

Played for Both

Several players have swapped South Wales for the Cotswolds, and vice versa, in recent years. One former Exile who will line up against us on Tuesday night is Ryan Inniss. Inniss spent time on us on loan from Crystal Palace in the 21/22 season, playing 22 times. He has been a regular in the Forest Green line-up this year, starting 16 games so far.

A player that most Newport fans will have fond memories of is Jamille Matt. Matt played 76 games for us, hitting the net 20 times. He would then head to the New Lawn, where he would play for three seasons before leaving for Walsall.

One man who knows both Newport County and Forest Green is David Pipe. The club legend captained Forest Green for two seasons after a successful spell with us, where he played a pivotal role in helping us return to the Football League.
