Match Preview | Crewe Alexandra (H)

Following Tuesday’s excellent comeback win over Forest Green, Newport will look to add provide more festive cheer for the fans at Rodney Parade when we take on Crewe on Friday night.

Lewis Payne returned to the starting XI on Tuesday night and rewarded the gaffer’s faith with a stunning goal, while Will Evans cemented his place in the team with an excellent brace. Adam Lewis made his long-awaited return to the bench against Forest Green Rovers, and Graham Coughlan will no doubt want to get more minutes in his legs against Crewe.

Harry Charsley was impressive once again in his second consecutive start since returning from injury, while Seb Palmer-Houlden will look to return to the team after being on the bench previously.

Opposition Form

After an incredible start to the season that saw Lee Bell’s Crewe side storm into the automatic promotion spots, the Railway Men have been in a bit of a slump in recent weeks. They are winless in five league matches, coming into Friday’s encounter having lost three of their last four games.

The team has had a torrid festive season so far, recording back-to-back losses against Barrow at home and Walsall away, respectively.

Former Exiles Mickey Demetriou and Courtney Baker-Richardson are expected to play, with the latter being the team’s top scorer this campaign. Baker-Richardson is likely to be partnered with Shilow Tracey, with Aaron Rowe backing the two strikers up.

Last Time Out

Crewe Alexandra v Newport County Match Highlights

Friday’s clash will provide us with our first chance at revenge this season. Our last encounter with Crewe was back in August, our third game of the season.

Our former captain, Mickey Demetriou, returned to haunt us, getting the home side off the mark in the eighth minute. Will Evans would head us level in the 21st minute, sending us in level at the break.

Crewe were dominant in the second half, though, with Demetriou volleying home to put them back in the lead in the 57th minute. Chris Long would then convert a penalty in the 66th minute, before Elliott Nevitt grabbed a fourth. A late consolation from Harry Charsley saw the scoreline finish more respectfully.

Head to Head

Friday’s game will be our tenth encounter with Crewe in recent years, with the visitors winning three and us winning four. Three of our encounters have ended in a draw. The last time we welcomed them to Rodney Parade was at the end of last season, with the game providing a highly entertaining 2-2 draw.

Played for Both

Two players who will need no introduction on Friday night are Mickey Demetriou and Courtney Baker-Richardson. Demetriou put pen to paper at Rodney Parade in 2017 and would go on to make over 300 appearances, cementing his status as a club legend in the process.

Courtney Baker Richardson spent a season in South Wales, hitting the net eight times in 31 games. He would sign for Crewe at the start of the 22/23 season.
