From the Archive | An Aaron Wildig Masterclass

This Saturday afternoon, we make the long trip to Birkenhead to take on Tranmere Rovers. This follows our 1-1 draw with Barnet this weekend, a game which saw Aaron Wildig return to the side following a spell on the sidelines.

Wildig is not a name Tranmere fans will be happy to see back in the team, with the industrious midfielder putting on a masterclass against them on our last trip to Prenton Park in the game that is the focus of this week’s From the Archive.

After a steady opening twenty minutes, Wildig decided to turn things up a gear in the 25th minute. The midfielder burst into the area, firing a low shot past Joe Murphy in the Tranmere goal to put us a goal to the good.

We came close to doubling our lead two minutes later when Omar Bogle found Charlie McNeill in space. The on-loan striker raced through one-on-one, but couldn’t keep his shot on target, putting it just wide of the goal.

However, McNeill wouldn’t make the same mistake again in the 29th minute. Wildig swung an inch-perfect free kick into the back post, which was met by Cameron Norman. Norman was denied by Murphy, but the ball fell to McNeill, who smashed it into an empty net to put us 2-0 ahead.

The clock ticked on, and we would grab a third with just eight minutes left of normal time. A poor goal kick from Joe Murphy was collected in midfield by, you guessed it, Aaron Wildig. Wildig then drove forward, playing a pass through to Calum Kavanagh, who cooly slotted past the keeper to make it 3-0.

Tranmere would deny us a clean sheet in the second minute of stoppage time when Harvey Saunders deflected a cross to Regan Hendry, who hit a scrappy goal past Joe Day.
