Two goals in each half of a grey and wet afternoon in Stockport made sure that Newport couldn’t claim an Easter double. Both teams came into this EFL League Two fixture in good form with unbeaten runs.
Stockport edged a first half with chances at both ends but the home team took their chances clinically with Kyle Wootton scoring with a close range header after some good work on the right hand side from Myles Hippolyte. Omar Bogle nearly gave an instant reply for the Exiles after some tenacious work by Calum Kavanagh although his shot was saved by Ben Hinchcliffe in the Stockport goal.
The Exiles best chance came in the 35th minute when Charlie McNeill’s edge of the area volley fell into Hinchcliffe’s arms.
Wootton got his second of the game in additional time when Ryan Rydal found himself in space on the left hand side and made a neat pass to Wootton who controlled and turned in style and followed it up with a shot that went past Joe Day to make the half time score 2-0.
McNeill, once again, had Newport’s best chance of the second half after a neat tap on from Omar Bogle but his first time shot went just wide.
Stockport County found themselves 3-0 up after 65 minutes when Jack Stretton found space at the far post following a long cross from Will Collar and knocked it past Joe Day. An impressive Knoyle hit the home team’s fourth and final goal just before the final whistle with a short range strike at the far post.
