Substitute Dom Telford scored a late header as Newport County AFC were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at home to nine-man Exeter City.
The Grecians lost Alex Hartridge after just eight minutes when the defender brought down Nicky Maynard, before Ryan Bowman - whose volley had put his side ahead - was given his marching orders for a foul on Mickey Demetriou.
County were on the front foot for almost the entirety of the second-half, but had to wait until the 88th minute to find an equaliser through Telford, who headed home from close range to rescue a point.
The closing stages saw the Exiles desperately searching for a winning goal, but they were unable to find the net for a second time and were forced to settle for a draw at Rodney Parade.
Manager Michael Flynn made two changes to the side which lost 1-0 to Southend United last Tuesday, with Joss Labadie and Ryan Taylor returning to the starting XI.
After a frantic start to the game, which saw a sending off and a goal for Matt Taylor’s side, County began to regain control of proceedings.
Priestley Farquharson showed good skill to back heel the ball through to Joss Labadie, who was fouled just outside the area by Matt Jay. The resulting free-kick from Matty Dolan was gathered by Jokull Andresson.
Flynn made a double substitution just after the half-hour mark, bringing on Aaron Lewis and Dom Telford in place of Matty Dolan and David Longe-King.
Nicky Maynard had a good chance to level the game, but saw his shot from close range blocked on its way to goal after Exeter failed to clear an Exiles throw-in from the right.
The hosts began to ramp up the pressure with half-time approaching, as Luke Gambin’s ball into the area was diverted narrowly over the bar by Exeter’s Pierce Sweeney.
County went close in first-half stoppage time when Labadie’s low strike from 20 yards out narrowly evaded the right post.
Ryan Taylor fired his volley wide at the beginning of the second-half, after Farquharson had done well to head the ball in his direction.
The Exiles went close when Ryan Haynes, who had a productive evening on the left flank, saw his low shot palmed behind. The resulting corner led to a couple more opportunities, which were blocked by the Grecians defence.
Substitute Aaron Lewis found Padraig Amond with a cross from the right side, but the forward’s header was straight into the arms of Andresson.
With County still searching for an equaliser in the closing stages, Maynard’s glancing header flew just wide of the left post.
The hosts had two excellent opportunities in quick succession when Jake Scrimshaw’s shot from inside the area was tipped over the crossbar by Andresson, who kept County at bay.
But the Exiles made their pressure count with three minutes remaining on the clock when Haynes' delivery was nodded home by substitute Telford.
The result means County remain in fifth position in the Sky Bet League Two standings.
