Kiban Rai is a talented Welsh striker for Newport County in EFL League Two, born on October 24, 2004, in Brecon, Wales. Having joined Newport’s youth academy at Under-15 level, Rai has steadily developed into one of the club’s most promising young talents. His senior debut came on 5 March 2023, when he featured as a second-half substitute in a League Two match against Salford City. This marked the beginning of a promising journey, and in June 2023, Rai signed his first professional contract with the Exiles, a significant milestone in his young career.
Rai quickly made a name for himself on 29 August 2023, when he scored his first goal for Newport County in dramatic fashion, netting a 96th-minute equaliser in an EFL Cup match against Premier League side Brentford. Although Newport eventually lost the game on penalties, Rai's late strike demonstrated his ability to perform on the big stage and underscored his potential for the future.
Beyond his achievements on the pitch, Rai’s story is made even more special by his strong ties to Nepal. As the son of a former British Army Gurkha, Rai proudly represents his Nepalese heritage. In 2023, he became the first player of Nepalese descent to sign a professional contract in the English Football League, a significant moment that has inspired many in both the Nepalese community and the broader footballing world.
Known for his creativity, technical skill, and versatility, Rai can operate as both a striker and an attacking midfielder. His impressive growth within the Newport ranks marks him as one to watch as he continues to develop and make an impact in the professional game.
