Player Biography

Michael Spellman is an exciting winger for Newport County, joining the Exiles on a two-year deal in July 2024. Born on 21 September 2002, the talented wide player brings pace, creativity, and a sharp eye for goal to the team’s attacking options.

Spellman began his football journey at the Park View Academy before showcasing his goalscoring talent with Chester-le-Street United, where he netted 19 goals in 23 appearances, including 14 in the Wearside League. After a trial with Livingston in 2021, Spellman found his way to Sunderland, initially on a non-contract basis in March 2022 before earning a permanent deal that summer.

During his time with Sunderland, Spellman gained valuable experience through loan spells. He had a stint with Whitby Town in the Northern Premier League, scoring once in four appearances, and later joined Blyth Spartans in the National League North, continuing his development in senior football. Following the conclusion of his Sunderland contract in 2024, Spellman made the move to Rodney Parade, eager to establish himself in the professional game.

Spellman made his Newport County debut on 28 September 2024 in a 2-1 League Two victory over Crewe Alexandra, coming on as a substitute to make an instant impact. Just days later, he scored his first goal for the Exiles in a 3-1 win against Salford City, underlining his potential as a key contributor for the club.

With his dynamic playing style and ability to take on defenders, Spellman promises to be an integral part of Newport County’s ambitions in the 2024-25 season.
