Aaron Wildig is an experienced midfielder who joined Newport County in June 2022, bringing a wealth of Football League experience to the Exiles. Born on April 15, 1992, in Hereford, Wildig began his professional career at Cardiff City, progressing through the club’s youth ranks before making his first-team debut at just 17 years old.
Wildig’s debut for Cardiff came in August 2009 during a League Cup victory over Dagenham & Redbridge, and he quickly followed this up with further appearances in the competition and in the Championship. His first league goal came in a match against Newcastle United during the 2009-10 season, a notable milestone in his early career.
To gain more playing time, Wildig had loan spells with Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Premier League and Shrewsbury Town, where his performances earned him a permanent move to the latter in May 2012. Wildig was an important part of Shrewsbury's squad, contributing to their promotion to League One and making over 100 appearances during his time at the club.
After leaving Shrewsbury in 2015, Wildig joined Morecambe, where he enjoyed a successful seven-year spell. He became a key figure at the club, providing consistency in midfield, and helped Morecambe achieve promotion to League One for the first time in their history during the 2020-21 season.
In June 2022, Wildig made the move to Newport County, debuting in the club's opening match of the 2022-23 season against Sutton United. He scored his first goal for the Exiles shortly after, netting in a memorable 3-2 victory over Portsmouth in the EFL Cup. Wildig’s influence on the pitch, both defensively and offensively, made him a key player for Newport, and he signed a one-year contract extension in June 2024.
Although he initially represented Wales at under-16 level, it was later discovered that Wildig did not qualify for the Welsh national team. Nonetheless, his career at club level has flourished, making him a reliable and experienced presence in League Two.
Wildig’s leadership, vision, and composure in midfield make him a vital component of Newport County's squad as they aim for success in the current campaign.
