Matt Baker is a talented defender who returned to Newport County in July 2024, signing a permanent two-year deal after two successful loan spells with the Exiles. Known for his composure and leadership at the back, Baker has also represented Wales at the under-21 level and was recently called up to the senior national team.
Born on 6th February 2003 in Kent, Baker began his football journey with Gillingham before joining Stoke City in June 2021. After progressing through the youth ranks at Stoke, he moved to Newport County on loan in January 2023, where he made his Football League debut on 14th February 2023 in a 2-2 draw against Stevenage. Baker's performances earned him 18 appearances during the second half of the season, helping Newport finish 15th in League Two.
Impressed by his impact, Newport re-signed Baker on loan for the 2023–24 season, where he was a key figure in the squad, making 39 appearances. His consistency and strong defensive abilities contributed to Newport's campaign, and following his successful loan spells, Baker made a permanent move to Rodney Parade in July 2024.
Baker made an immediate impact, scoring his first goal for Newport on August 17, 2024, in a 3-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers. With his skill, work ethic, and defensive versatility, he has quickly become a fan favourite at Newport.
Internationally, Baker qualifies for Wales through his mother, who was born in Narberth, Pembrokeshire. He has captained the Wales U19 team and made his Wales U21 debut in March 2023, where he was part of a 3-0 win over Scotland U21. His leadership qualities were further recognised as he became captain of the U21 squad. In June 2024, Baker was called up to the Wales senior squad for the first time, marking an exciting milestone in his career.
Baker’s impressive rise through the ranks and his consistent performances for Newport County highlight his bright future, both at club and international levels.
