Player Biography

Shane McLoughlin is a versatile Irish footballer, capable of playing both in midfield and defence, who joined Newport County in July 2023. Born on 1st March 1997 in New York City, McLoughlin moved to County Kerry, Ireland at the age of five, where he began his footballing journey. Known for his work rate and adaptability, McLoughlin has built a career across multiple levels of English football, gaining valuable experience in both League One and League Two.

McLoughlin's football career began in Ireland at St. Brendan's Park, before making the move to Ipswich Town in July 2013, where he signed a two-year scholarship. Progressing through the Ipswich academy, he signed his first professional contract in 2016 and made his senior debut in a 2-1 EFL Cup match against Crystal Palace in August 2017. During his time at Ipswich, McLoughlin gained experience on loan at Bromley, where he made several appearances in the National League.

In January 2019, McLoughlin signed for AFC Wimbledon, where he became a regular feature in the squad and scored his first senior goal in a 2-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers in March 2019. Known for his versatility, McLoughlin was highly regarded by manager Glyn Hodges, who praised his ability to play across multiple positions and his hunger to improve.

Following his time at Wimbledon, McLoughlin joined Morecambe in July 2021, helping the side in their first-ever season in League One. In January 2023, he made the move to Salford City before joining Newport County on a two-year contract in July 2023.

Since joining Newport, McLoughlin has quickly established himself as a key figure in the team. He made his debut in the season opener against Accrington Stanley and scored his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw with Barrow in September 2023. His experience, combined with his tactical awareness and versatility, makes him a crucial asset for Newport as they push for success in EFL League Two.

On the international stage, McLoughlin has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-16 and under-18 levels. With dual eligibility for both Ireland and the United States, McLoughlin remains a player with potential for future international recognition.
