Newport County can confirm forward Will Evans has today joined Mansfield Town for an undisclosed fee.
The 27-year-old made 91 league appearances for the Exiles since making his bow against Sutton United on the opening day of the 2022-23 League Two season, but will now link up with Nigel Clough’s Stags on a two-year deal.
A passionate and ceaselessly energetic presence, Evans enjoyed an impressive two-year spell at Rodney Parade and backed up his goalscoring league tally last season by netting in the 4-2 FA Cup defeat to eventual winners Manchester United, finishing with 25 goals in all competitions.
His haul of 21 League Two goals placed him sixth in the fourth tier’s top scorers list. He was also shortlisted for PFA League Two Player of the Year, and won the club’s Top Goalscorer and Player of the Year awards.
Newport County chairman, Huw Jenkins, said: “We are obviously disappointed to lose Will after such a good campaign last season.
“But he is in the last year of his contract and expressed a strong desire to test himself at a higher level. We discussed the situation with Will and his agent over the summer and we agreed that if a reasonable offer came in then we would both move forward with clarity.
“The club is still at a rebuilding stage after a difficult few years’ financially, so it was an offer we couldn’t turn down at this stage in our journey.
“Will joined the professional game late in his career and is no doubt eager to play at the highest level he can to continue his climb up the footballing ladder.
“I’m sure everyone would like to wish Will good luck with his new challenge and thank him for his hard work, dedication and commitment to the club over the last few seasons.”
Everyone at Newport County sincerely thanks Will for his services to the club, and wish him every success in his future career.
