Shane McLoughlin was pleased by the way Newport County dug in to earn a hard-fought point at AFC Wimbledon, insisting the result will give the Exiles belief.
Nelson Jardim’s men battled back to secure a 2-2 draw at the Cherry Red Records Stadium in League Two on Tuesday night.
After being two goals down inside the first 20 minutes, a strike from Michael Spellman and a late penalty from McLoughlin left the two teams level at the end of a dramatic contest.
"It's a great point for us which will only give us confidence,” said the NO.19 post-match.
“I was looking forward to taking the penalty at the end there. I’ve been waiting to take one for a while now because we’ve missed a few this season, so I said I was going to go next and was confident I’d score.
“I think the fact it was the last kick of the game made it even more special, so I’m buzzing with that.
“It’s very hard to keep your emotions in check at that point in the game. To score in the last seconds is a great feeling.
“I think scoring in front of the fans too added an awful lot to the moment as well. Their support was brilliant all night and it was a great moment to share with them.
“I thought the late penalty and the point was the least we deserved from the game tonight if I’m honest.
“We should have won the game based on the chances we created, but it’s another good point in the right direction for us.
"It was a disappointing start to the game because recently we’ve been really solid at the back. We were undone by two set-pieces early on and we knew they were a threat from them.
“That was the disappointing aspect of the game but we showed great battling spirit to come back and earn the point."
