Oliver Greaves | It was about going back to the basics

Oliver Greaves

Oliver Greaves was pleased with Newport County’s positive return to action following their 1-0 victory over West Ham United Under-21s in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

The forward scored the only goal of the match with a smart finish eight minutes from time, after the Exiles had suffered heavy back-to-back league defeats against Port Vale and Swindon Town.

And Greaves was left pleased with his winning strike and his side’s response against the young Irons.

“It was a great to get the goal tonight,” said the forward.

“The lads did really well up until the point I came on. I could see we were pushing for that goal and the Gaffa just said to me to go on and get something, and fortunately that’s what I did.

“It was a good finish from me and I’ll take them all day. It was a great ball from Bryn into Courtney for the build-up and then I just remember getting anything I could on it before the defender.

“Tonight’s win was really important for us as a group. We spoke about Saturday yesterday in training in detail because the performance level there was nowhere near good enough for us.

“It was about going back to the basics tonight. Running, tackling, winning your individuals battles and coming away from the on the ball kind of stuff.

“I feel like we did that well and it was a much better improvement from Saturday. Hopefully, we can push on from this now and get back to winning ways in the league.”

The Exiles return to action in quick succession as they make the long journey to Barrow on Saturday afternoon.

Stephen Clemences’ men have enjoyed a positive start to the new League Two season, losing just one of their opening six matches.

And Greaves admits that his side are expecting a tough test against the Bluebirds in Cumbria.

“We know Barrow are going to be a tough opponent,” added the forward.

“They’re well known for being a hard-working side and they’ve started the season off really well.

“It will be a tough test for us, one we will be ready for, and hopefully we can just get back to winning ways in the league because that’s the most important thing at this moment in time.”
