Newport County can confirm the signing of goalkeeper Jacob Carney, subject to international clearance and EFL approval.

The former Manchester United and Sunderland shot-stopper arrives in NP19 after putting pen-to-paper on a two-year deal with the club.

Carney, 23, came through United’s academy set-up and signed his first professional contract at Old Trafford in May 2020, whilst spending the latter half of the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Portadown in Northern Ireland.

After leaving the Red Devils following the conclusion of the 2020-21 campaign, the highly sought-after goalkeeper signed a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light under manager, Lee Johnson, with a further option of another year.

Last season, Carney featured for the Black Cats’ under 23s side, before joining Spanish club, CD Castellón, where we helped them achieve promotion from the third tier.

Following his arrival at Rodney Parade, Carney said: “I’m really happy to be here.

“I’ve been speaking to the club for quite a while and now that it’s all done, I’m looking forward to getting into pre-season and meeting the lads.

“The philosophy of the chairman (Huw Jenkins) is how I want to play. It ticked every box for me.”

Welcome to Newport County, Jacob!
