Newport Bus Dedicates EV to Club Legend David Hando B.E.M.

Newport Bus has partnered with Newport County to dedicate an electric bus to Newport legend David Hando B.E.M., commemorating his memory two years after his passing.

In January, Newport County and Newport Bus invited David’s family to Rodney Parade to visit the honorary bus, take photographs, and share stories about David’s incredible legacy. It was a special moment to remember his instrumental work in and around Newport, as well as his lasting impact on the club.

David Hando B.E.M. was a well-known son of the City of Newport, born on 7th April 1938. He spent the majority of his life in the city and dedicated much of his time to serving both Newport and its people. A devoted family man, David and his wife Mary had three sons and six grandsons, who all still live locally.

Newport Bus Managing Director, David Jenkins, said: “As the local bus provider for the City of Newport, our intention is to ensure David's legacy travels far and wide as our services operate throughout Newport and across South Wales. Naming a bus, fleet number ‘Z40’, in his honour is a fitting tribute to the impact he had on our community.”

Newport County COO, Jonathan Wilsher, added: “We are honoured to see Newport Bus dedicate a bus to the late David Hando, our former chairman and a true club legend. His unwavering dedication and passion for the club was instrumental in shaping its history, and his legacy will forever be a part of Newport County.

"This tribute is a fantastic way to celebrate his incredible contributions to both the club and the wider community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Newport Bus for recognising his impact in such a meaningful way.”

This dedication would not have been possible without the support and guidance of David’s family, who wanted to ensure he is remembered for his accomplishments, his commitment to the community, and his love of all things Newport.

We would also like to extend our thanks to Newport Bus for their efforts in making this tribute a reality.

Bus Z40, now titled ‘David Hando, B.E.M.’, will serve all areas of Newport while also travelling further afield to Monmouth, Chepstow, Abergavenny, Hereford, the Forest of Dean, and beyond.
