Nelson Jardim | We’re in a tough spell at the moment

Nelson Jardim

Head Coach Nelson Jardim is determined to steer Newport County back on track after a challenging run of three consecutive defeats.

The Exiles welcome Grimsby Town to Rodney Parade on Saturday afternoon, hoping to secure their first home win since early October.

Last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Tranmere, followed by a midweek defeat to Reading in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, extended their winless run, with County’s last points coming from a 1-1 draw against Fleetwood on October 26.

Jardim acknowledged the tough spell his team is enduring but remains confident they can turn things around, despite facing a Grimsby side in strong form, having won their last five away games.

“We’re in a tough spell at the moment, there’s no hiding away from that,” said the Portuguese.

“We’re not where we want to be, and we’re not playing how we want to play. But we have to stick together.

“We’re conceding too many goals, which is still a problem, but we’re learning and trying to improve in that area.

“This league is crazy. Everyone has a bad spell now and then, and we are in one of them moments. One minute you can be enjoying a run of wins and then the next minute you’re on the losing end of those runs.

“It’s a tough time for everyone at the moment and everyone is hurting, but we are determined to get back to winning ways."

Asked about his side lacking confidence due to the youthfulness of the squad, Jardim added: "Yes, it plays a role, but that’s the same for any young team.

"Confidence is a big part of football, and when you lose a few games, it can affect players. But we’ve started games well.

"Football is all about confidence. We know that in some matches, we’ve faltered in the second half, and that’s something we need to address.

"We’ve had some good spells in games also and it’s about us putting that together for longer periods.

“My job is to install confidence in the players and prepare them as best as I can for each game. My job is also to give players positive messages and make sure we’re all on the same page as a group.”
