Nelson Jardim | We must learn from today to improve

Head Coach Nelson Jardim praised his side’s “commitment and character” despite their opening day defeat to Cheltenham Town.

The Exiles endured a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at Whaddon Road, missing out on all three points in a match that could have gone their way.

County found themselves 2-0 down within the first 30 minutes, with goals from Cardiff City’s Joel Colwill and Liam Dulson.

However, they fought-back before half-time, leveling the score with a Courtney Baker-Richardson penalty and a debut goal from Oliver Greaves.

But despite pushing for a winner, County's efforts were undone when Colwill struck again in the 96th minute.

“The first word is for the fans,” said Jardim post-match after his side were roared on by 1,046 traveling supporters.

“They were great today and we felt their energy.

“First 20 minutes we were really on top, maybe for five minutes we lost our way and conceded two.

"The second word is for the players, who showed a lot of commitment and character. Only a great group can come from a difference of two goals back to 2-2.

“It’s very unfair that we lost the game. We should have won that game actually, taking into account the amount of goal-scoring chances that we had.

“We have to take this, learn from it and move on. We were also unlucky, playing with 10 at the end due to an injury after we had made all our substitutions.

“Despite this, we still had the ball in their end and if Kargbo was still on we might have had another chance of our own.

“As I said we must learn from today to improve.”

He added: “There is still a long way to go and we are not happy with everything we did today, but we now know what we must work on.

“We know that it’s never easy to come to a place like this because they have a strong squad, but I thought that we were on top for the majority of the match and this is a good indication for the future.”
