Head coach Nelson Jardim praised his side for their battling performance after a 1-0 victory at Morecambe made it three straight League Two triumphs to take the Exiles up into fourth place.
“It was a great day,” said Jardim. “We always knew that this game was going to be difficult as they’ve got a good team.
“I thought the first 20 minutes were probably our best of the season, but then we had to manage the game, and we began to lose control. We had to work hard to keep the clean sheet, but we managed to reach that goal.
“I told the players in the dressing room that, of course, we want three points, but I wanted to see us play as a team. Today, I feel we did, which is a positive thing for me. This is not only about the three points; to me, we have shown we are a good group.
“I just want to give praise to the whole team for how they performed. Today we had to suffer and defend, but we were there to compete.”
Jardim also highlighted the hard work the players have been putting in on the training ground.
“We know that this is a result of the hard work we have been doing on the training ground,’’ he added.
“The clean sheet was the result of that work and the players getting to know each other, while I am learning more about them. I think we can all see that everything is beginning to come together now and hopefully we can keep going.
“There will be a lot of work to be done, and we will go back in on Monday to continue improving on the things I saw today.”
Jardim was also quick to praise County ‘keeper, Nick Townsend, for his display after several outstanding saves.
“Nick has been great,’’ added the head coach. “He is well known in this league, an experienced keeper, and we are lucky to have him. Today was one of those days when the team needed him, and he was there for us.”
