Nelson Jardim | This is a wake-up call for everyone

Head coach Nelson Jardim declared Newport County’s 5-0 midweek defeat to Accrington Stanley as a 'wake-up call for everyone'.

The Exiles fell to defeat in Lancashire after braces from Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh and Kelsey Mooney, along with a further strike from Tyler Walton.

“It was very disappointing, this is a wake-up call for everyone,” he said post-match.

“The two teams started with different levels of desire and aggression. That was the reason we were down 3-0 after 25 minutes.

“When you lose 5-0 you don’t need to talk too much because the result speaks for itself. It’s not only down to me to find reasons for that. Some of the players will have to find reasons as well.

They [the players] have missed another chance to show what they can do. In our last 11 games we have won five and drawn two, so when you look at our team you have to look a bit wider.

“We have 10 games to go and what we have seen today can’t happen again because that was two teams that started with different desire and aggression.

“When you don't match the opposition with that then you find yourself 3-0 down in 25 minutes.

“Against Gillingham we had a different type of aggression to the opposition and did the same as Accrington.

“We need to start with aggression and desire because that was not good enough. There has to be a squad response.”
