Nelson Jardim | Our boys fought until the end

Nelson Jardim

Head coach Nelson Jardim praised his sides battling efforts despite their 2-0 defeat to league leaders Barrow AFC.

Goals from Theo Vassell and Elliot Newby secured all three points for the home side in Cumbria.

“I think they showed why they are top of the league,” said the Exiles boss.

“They’re a good team who play good football and they are also a physical team. I think if you look at the one-v-ones we came across in the game, we lost most of them.

“Our boys, however, fought until the end and gave everything. We could see how hard they were trying but sometimes in football you just have to accept that the opposition is better than you on the day.

“We managed to keep the score at 1-0 but some of the chances they were creating were also from us not dealing well with the one-v-ones. Their first goal is basically from a one-v-one situation we lost from the halfway line which developed into the cross.

“Half time was just making sure that we kept going and we adjusted what we needed to tactically. I think we started the second half quite well addressing a couple of things.

"We knew that if we could keep the result at 1-0 towards the last ten to fifteen minutes anything could happen for us.

“With seven games done we are halfway up the table with nine points, just two points away from good teams like Port Vale.

"We have to consider the timing of the season at the moment and the position that we are in with injuries and suspensions.”

The Exiles head into the start of a busy winter period with back-to-back home matches against Crewe Alexandra and Salford City in League Two.

And Jardim is looking to target an improvement in form back at Rodney Parade.

“We now have to go back to the drawing board and address what we need to do,” added the Portuguese.

“We look forward to making sure that the home games are massive for us. We have two games now that hopefully we can get some points in.

“Home games are massive for us, I think I said that when we beat Doncaster at home earlier in the season. We all agree those games are massive for us and we have to make sure we win them.

“Again, coming away and trying our best to play to win, I think everyone can see we are putting everything we’ve got into everything we do.”
