Newport County is pleased to confirm the appointment of Nelson Jardim to the club’s coaching team.
Jardim will take on the role of ‘Lead Coach’ while the club continues its search for a new Head Coach.
He will work alongside current first-team coach Dafydd Williams and goalkeeping coach Jim Hollman.
Jardim, 45, initially joined Swansea City as a coach under manager Paulo Sousa in 2009, before following the former Portuguese international and Champions League winner to Leicester City a year later.
From there he returned to Portugal to become assistant manager at LigaPro side Nacional before returning to Swansea in 2017 as a lead academy coach and then first team coach under Francesco Guidolin, Paul Clement and Carlos Carvalhal.
He departed the Liberty Stadium to become part of Aitor Karanka’s coaching team at Birmingham City in 2020, before returning home to become Maritimo B manager in his native Portugal.
Having left his post to join Newport County, Jardim met the staff and squad for the first time on Monday as they reported back for pre-season testing and training.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge,’’ explained Jardim. “I’ve known the chairman (Huw Jenkins) for close on 14 years at Swansea and I know exactly what he is looking for.
“I know his philosophy for coaching, playing and what he expects from everyone at the club, on and off the pitch, in terms of culture.
“The project really excites me. It’s the chance to build something new at the football club. It’s a fresh start for everyone.’’
