Nelson Jardim | It's a huge win for the club

NELSON JARDIM

Head coach Nelson Jardim hailed "a huge win for the club" after his side defeated Doncaster Rovers 3-1 at Rodney Parade.

Goals from Bobby Kamwa, Kai Whitmore and Matt Baker inspired the Exiles to their first home win of the new campaign.

“I loved everything. It has been perfect being here and feeling that energy from the fans, it has been great," began Jardim.

" I’d just like to thank them for their support throughout the game and yes excellent atmosphere.

“From the beginning they were great, and I think there’s always a chemistry between the players and the crowd. So yes, they were huge in lifting the players after going down a goal.

“It’s a huge win for the club but I want to dedicate it from me and the players to the fans they were brilliant today.

“Full credit to Doncaster they play some good football and are an organised team so winning against them is even better it means a lot.

"It’s another step to make the boys believe in what we are doing and what we are building. It’s always easier to build after a win.”

Jardim reflected on the win and how the team have improved on recent performances: "I thought we started well and actually we could’ve scored in the first minutes.

"We had two or three chances at the very beginning of the game we didn’t score but again we had to overcome being a goal down.

"But that builds even more character and that resilience so we know we’ve got that in the team now. If we can score the first goal yes that would help the team and I would suffer a little bit less now.

“Yes, the first two games we conceded seven goals and we’ve been working with the players to get those basics right.

"With the quality of Doncaster and especially when they were losing they put a lot of pressure on us, but the boys did well today to hold them off.

"The challenge is to do the same but with a little bit more. So next week we will be looking to do the same but with more quality that is the objective.”

Talking on goal-scorer and home debutant, Kai Whitmore, Jardim added:

“He fully deserves it, he's a brilliant footballer, hardworking player, good boy as well and I’m so happy he got his goal and could help the team.

“Kai showed what he could do today, he’s a very handy player who can play in multiple positions.

"He competes that’s the main thing along with those moments of inspiration such as his goal, which was a great goal. Especially for me watching from the bench it was good to watch.”
