Head coach Nelson Jardim was pleased to see his side halt their five-match losing streak with a hard-earned draw against Salford City on Tuesday night at the Peninsula Stadium.
Shane McLoughlin gave Newport County the lead early on with a penalty, but Salford quickly responded with one of their own, with Hakeeb Adelakun converting from the spot.
The Ammies were then reduced to ten men when Tyrese Fornah was sent off in the 75th minute, but Newport couldn't capitalise on the numerical advantage.
"I think it was important that we stopped the losing run,” Jardim said post-match. “We've done it now and it's a question of building up.
“Obviously a point away is always good but, after the first half, I was disappointed not to be leading the game.
“We had more than enough chances to score and we just have to take our chances. We had David (Ajiboye) with one and Josh Martin with another.
“The boys showed fighting spirit and character and a point is not bad. The main point was to stop the losing run.
“It was a positive point at Salford and we can look forward for the next two home games.
“We have Barrow and Morecambe, and from now until the end of the season we have 12 at home and eight away.
“That is positive but we need to win those two games now, there is no other option for us. If we manage to do that, and it will be tough, then the team will be back on track and in a good way.”
