Nelson Jardim | I think a point is a fair result for both teams

Head coach Nelson Jardim praised his side for battling to a point in the 'right direction' as they were held to a goalless draw against Fleetwood.

A first half penalty save by David Harrington to deny Bryn Morris and an injury time save from Nick Townsend saw County secure their first draw of the season.

"It was a fair result and a point for us in the right direction,” said the Portuguese post-match.

“I know we missed a penalty but we created lots of chances and so did they. So, at the end of the game I think a point is a fair result for both teams but the game could've gone either way.

"He’s okay it is part of the game. Bryn (Morris) has done well for us in the last few games we are grateful for the effort he has put in for us. It’s a penalty, you can only miss if you are brave enough to take one.

"This game deserved goals but we have to take the positives which is back-to-back games with two clean sheets which is something we were looking for and very happy with.

"It shows the team is growing, being competitive and getting hard to beat.".

He added: "We have been working on little details and getting small wins. It’s about finding the balance between goal scoring and keeping clean sheets.

"The end product would have been with a win but it is positive to not concede a goal again especially after Gillingham.

"This has been a good week for us, if you had told me on Monday morning that we would end the week with four points I would have been happy.

"I’m very happy with the week especially after a tough month.

"We started winning with a win against Salford but then a bit of a dip with the long travels up north. The boys have dug deep and been brilliant and it has ended as a positive month."

Newport County return to action next Saturday with a first round Emirates FA Cup clash against League One side, Peterborough United.

When questioned on the importance of the game, he replied:  "It is a huge game this weekend against Peterborough and with the small break we will be looking to give rest to some players.

"This game will be massive for the club and the players and we will prepare for the game very well and be competitive."
