Head coach Nelson Jardim was pleased with side’s application after they rounded off their pre-season campaign with a 0-0 draw against Hereford FC.
In a game of very few clear-cut chances, neither team could find a breakthrough in the encounter at Edgar Street.
But despite the goalless draw in HR4, Jardim believed he a saw a lot of positive aspects ahead of Newport County’s League Two opener against Cheltenham Town next weekend.
“I’m happy with the lads’ effort and performance overall,” said Jardim post-match.
“We knew this pre-season game was going to be another process, but I thought it was a solid performance and it was good to come out of it with a clean sheet.
“We created a couple of good chances to score but we need to be more clinical in that final third. We know there is still a lot to do but we’re getting there as a team.
“Throughout pre-season our focus has been on the build-up to creating chances. First of all as a team, you need to be organised at the back which will then allow you to build going forward.
“I think the people who were here today can see there is a new style being implemented and something that will take time.
“The boys are really enjoying the process, and you can see that on the pitch. There is still obviously a lot of work to be done, but it is coming. Hopefully, with a good first couple of games that confidence and belief can be installed around the team."
Assessing pre-season as a whole, he added: “The boys have been brilliant. They have worked really hard, and I have nothing but positive things to say.
“It’s been tough for us at the same time as we’ve had our ups and downs, but that’s expected with the amount of change over the summer.
"We’ve had a lot of trialists in over pre-season and it’s taken the players time to adjust to the new style of play.
“Overall, I’m happy with how pre-season has gone from a personal perspective, and we cannot wait for next week.”
Former Burton Albion winger Bobby Kamwa made his debut in the clash at Edgar Street and was a real positive for County as he struck the post and went close on several occasions.
And the Exiles’ head coach was pleased with what he saw from his latest signing.
“He [Bobby] was really good today and that’s why we got him here - to help the team,” continued Jardim
“He’s going to be a good asset for us, and he brings something different which is what we need. I need to see him a little bit more now to assess where he can help us more in attack.
“On a whole though, I was really happy with his performance on his debut and I’m looking forward to what he can bring to us going forward.”
