Michael Spellman | It was a great feeling to score my first goal

Michael Spellman hopes he can build on a goalscoring start to his Newport County career.

The 21-year-old – who recently joined the club following his release from Sunderland – made his debut in our 4-1 victory over Undy AFC on Saturday afternoon.

He got on the scoresheet in fine fashion as he composedly swept home Joe Thomas’ low cross to hand the Exiles the lead in the clash at Causeway.

And Spellman wants to use his first goal as a foundation for a strong future in Newport colours.

“It was a great feeling to score my first goal for the club on my debut,” said the winger.

“For me as a forward player, it’s always important to score goals and get up and running in pre-season.

“Scoring goals so early on can be huge for people like myself as it can set you up for the rest of the season.

“Hopefully that goal today is just the start of a positive campaign for me.

“The fans were brilliant today and it gave me a taste of what it’s going to be like playing at Rodney Parade this season.

“To score in front of them was great and I hope they liked what they saw so far."

He added: “Pre-season over the last two weeks has been really positive for the team. I’ve really enjoyed being amongst the lads and I’ve settled in really well.

“Sometimes as a new signing and a youngster it can take time to settle in, but I’ve been welcomed straight away by all the players and the club.

“I’m just looking forward to the next few weeks now.”
