What’s their story?
Port Vale, founded in 1876, are one of the oldest football clubs in the country and have a storied history rooted in Burslem, one of the six towns that make up Stoke-on-Trent. Known for their passionate fanbase and the iconic Vale Park stadium, Port Vale have spent much of their existence in the lower tiers of English football, with periods of success, particularly under long-serving manager John Rudge in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Rudge’s era remains the golden period for the Valiants, as he guided them to their highest league finish in over 60 years and enjoyed multiple promotions, as well as memorable FA Cup runs. The club even reached the second tier of English football (the old Division One) in 1994, where they remained for several seasons, battling against much larger clubs and regularly competing in the League Cup.
In recent years, however, Port Vale have seen their fortunes fluctuate. Despite their return to League One in 2022, the club was relegated back to League Two after a difficult 2023-24 season. They have had a tough start to the 2024-25 campaign, currently sitting 17th in League Two, with one win, one draw, and two losses from their first four matches.
Who’s the boss?
Darren Moore is the man in charge at Port Vale, having taken over the managerial reins ahead of the 2024-25 season. Moore brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously managed clubs like West Bromwich Albion, Doncaster Rovers, and Sheffield Wednesday, with whom he guided to the Championship in 2023.
A former centre-back, Moore enjoyed a distinguished playing career with stints at clubs including Bradford City, Portsmouth, and West Bromwich Albion. His managerial style is often praised for its emphasis on defensive organisation and fostering a strong team spirit, both of which will be crucial as Port Vale look to stabilise their form in League Two.
Who’s the captain?
Ben Garrity leads Port Vale as captain for the 2024-25 season. A versatile midfielder, Garrity has become a key figure since joining the club from Blackpool in 2021. Known for his energy, tenacity, and eye for goal, Garrity has consistently impressed with his work ethic and commitment on the pitch.
Garrity’s leadership qualities came to the fore during the 2023-24 season, and despite the team’s relegation, he remained a standout performer. His ability to drive the team forward from midfield and contribute crucial goals makes him a vital asset in their push for promotion back to League One.
Having now taken on the captain’s armband, Garrity’s influence in the dressing room and on the field will be crucial as Port Vale look to rebound this season.

Ryan Croasdale has quickly emerged as a key player for Port Vale since joining from Stockport County in the summer of 2024. A combative midfielder, Croasdale is known for his exceptional work rate, tackling ability, and leadership qualities in the centre of the park.
