Matt Baker | There will be tough spells in a season

Matt Baker

Newport County defender Matt Baker is hoping home comforts can help spark a turnaround as the Exiles prepare for two crucial back-to-back League Two fixtures at Rodney Parade.

Nelson Jardim’s side host Crewe Alexandra on Saturday afternoon, followed by a clash against Salford City on Tuesday night.

And with just one win from their last four outings, Baker sees the upcoming home fixtures as a key opportunity to regain form and build momentum, taking full advantage of the familiar surroundings and home support.

“We have two big games coming up,” began the Wales U21 international.

“Having two games so close together gives us a chance to return to winning ways and bounce back in front of the fans.

“We know the support the Amber Army give us and we want to get three points for them as soon as possible.

“There will be tough spells in a season and you have to put them behind you to do well.

“I know the results might not show it but I think we are in a good place and can do well this season.

“I am really excited for the rest of the season. We are a new team so it will take some time to glue together and results haven’t been the best recently, but I do see us pushing forward.

“We know it hasn’t been good enough the last few matches and that we can do better, so I am really excited for it.

“We've lost a few players due to injury and red cards but there is no loss in confidence in the dressing room.”

As the Railwaymen gear up for their trip to Rodney Parade tomorrow afternoon, one of the most familiar faces in the opposition lineup will be former Newport County captain, Mickey Demetriou.

Demetriou made over 280 appearances for the Exiles, playing pivotal role in the club's run to two League Two play-off finals against Tranmere Rovers and Morecambe at Wembley.

He also etched his name into County folklore by scoring the opening goal in the dramatic 2-1 victory over Notts County in 2017, a win that secured the club's survival in what became known as the "Great Escape" from relegation.

And Baker, who played alongside the ex-County defender during his first loan spell at the club back in 2023, is fully aware of the threat the former captain poses, as well as the quality Crewe bring to the table

“When I first came in I was only 19 at the time. He really helped me get used to the environment and how the games are played in League Two,” he added.

“He has so much experience and has played a lot of games over a lot of years now.

“Playing next to him definitely helped and I had James Clarke next to me as well, so those two really held me in good stead.

“He's one of the best defending scorers in the league and we all know what he can do. We also know the quality of the Crewe team."
