Newport County continue their pre-season campaign with a trip to Pontypridd United this evening (7.30pm).

The Exiles travel to the USW Sports Park looking to make it back-to-back wins following a 4-1 victory against Undy AFC in their opening friendly on Saturday afternoon.

Gavin Allen

Pontypridd United’s manager is Gavin Allen, who has been in his position since January. 

Following his arrival to South Wales, the UEFA Pro Licence Coach held the reigns at Cymru Premier club, Aberystwyth Town after being appointed in 2020. 

Allen first joined Aberystwyth as a player in 1996 after his release from Tranmere Rovers. He went on to score 113 goals in 238 appearances during three spells with the club over a nine-year period.

The former Wales Under-21 international also had spells for Bangor City, Barry Town and Carmarthen Town.

Ashley Evans

Pontypridd United have been busy in the transfer window this summer, following relegation back to the second tier this season. 

So far they have brought in midfielders Jamie Veale and Ashley Evans (pictured above) boasting a wealth of Cymru Premier experience and are former teammates, having both represented Merthyr Town in their careers.

Centre-back Joe Evans has also re-joined the Dragons after a loan spell at Cymru Premier side, Cardiff Met.

Following his departure from the Penybont this summer, Pontypridd have also captured the signing of former Cardiff City youngster, Dan Griffiths. 

 

OPPOSITION FOCUS | KEY PLAYER

Keston Davies

A key player for tonight’s opponents is defensive midfielder Keston Davies. 

Having had experience at Swansea City academy, along with appearances in the Football League during loan spells at Yeovil Town and Notts County, Davies’ arrival last season was a positive one for the Dragons.  

Davies also gained experience at international level before signing for reigning Cymru Premier Champions, The New Saints in 2020, having featured for Wales’ U17’s, U19’s and U21’s.

Regularly operating at the heart of United’s defence last season, Davies made 31 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals.
