Match Preview | Cheltenham Town (H)

Match preview

County begin their Bristol Street Motors Trophy campaign when they welcome Cheltenham Town to Rodney Parade this evening (September 3).

Nelson Jardim’s men will look to make it four wins in four as they continue to build on a strong start to the campaign.

Jardim will view the game as a vital opportunity to give several squad players a run-out, with potential first-starts on the cards for a handful of players.

Speaking about tonight's match, manager Nelson Jardim commented:

"We will rotate players to ensure everyone has the opportunity to show that their efforts in training are recognised. The matches come thick and fast, and with Saturday being a tough game, it’s crucial that we rotate the squad.

We are always learning; we take each game as it comes and learnt a lot from the last match against Cheltenham earlier in the season. However, every game is different."

Opposition Form

Cheltenham Town have found life hard since returning to League Two. After defeating us 3-2 on the opening day, The Robins have failed to secure another point, losing away at Walsall and Grimsby and at home to AFC Wimbledon.

Flynn's team have struggled at the back, conceding nine in their last four competitive games. At the other en, they have found the net three times since they hosted us in Gloucestershire, with Joel Colwill and Matt Taylor being their two biggest threats.

Last Time Out

Our last match with Cheltenham is extremely fresh in the memory, with us getting a quick chance for revenge after they defeated us 3-2 away from home in dramatic fashion on the opening day.

First half goals from Joel Colwill and Liam Duslon gave Cheltenham the lead,  before a Courtney Baker Richardson penalty and an Owen Greaves effort pulled us level before the break.

Unfortunately, traveling County fans were left disappointed after Joel Colwill completed his brace in the dying moments of the game, handing Cheltenham a late 3-2 win.

Head to Head

Since returning to the Football League, we have faced Cheltenham Town on 19 occasions in all competitions. Both sides have won six games, with seven ending in a draw.
