Newport County continue their pre-season campaign with a trip to Barry Town United on Saturday afternoon (2.30pm).
The Exiles travel to Jenner Park looking to make it three consecutive wins after a 2-0 victory over Pontypridd United last time out.
OPPOSITION FOCUS | THE MANAGER
Former Wales defender Steve Jenkins is the current manager of Barry Town United.
The 52-year-old won 16 caps for Wales and played for clubs including Swansea City, Huddersfield Town and Newport County.
Jenkins succeeded Lee Kendall, who stepped down as manager of the then newly promoted Cymru Premier club in August 2023.
He has previously managed Merthyr Town and been an assistant at Hereford and Barnet in the National League.
OPPOSITION FOCUS | SUMMER BUSINESS
Barry Town United have been busy in this year’s summer transfer window after successfully avoiding relegation in their first season back in the Cymru Premier.
Two key arrivals for the seasiders have been the addition of attacking midfielder Eliot Richards (pictured above) and Central defender Josh Yowerth. Both players will provide Barry with some useful experience and chemistry following their shared time at Merthyr Town in 2016.
32 year old Richards joined on a free transfer as Barry’s new number 8 following his departure from Penybont.
Josh Yowerth joined as Barry’s first summer signing, also on a free, and is set to bolster the teams defensive options.
OPPOSITION FOCUS | KEY PLAYER
A key player for the Linnets is striker Kayne Mclaggon.
The forward is currently the longest consecutively serving player at the club, entering his eighth season at Jenner Park after making his debut back in Summer 2017.
Having starting his career at Southampton’s academy, along with experiences at Weston-Super-Mare and Merthyr Town, the 33-year-old has settled into life back at Barry Town United comfortably after enjoying many high goal scoring seasons with the Linnets.
Mclaggon has gained valuable experience at international level with Wales’ U17’s, U19’s and Wales C.
The Linnets’ captain made 26 appearances in the Cymru Premier last season, scoring 6 goals and averaging 0.31 goals per game.
