Luke Hussey lauded the resilience and spirit of Newport County Under-18s after they secured a 3-1 victory over Cambrian United to reach the quarter-finals of the FAW Youth Cup.
Second half strikes from Declan Rowsell, Jaden Bahumaid and an own goal from Louis Wilde secured the young Exiles’ progression in the competition.
“It was a really competitive game,” said Hussey post-match. “Cambrian were really well organised and made life very difficult for us.
“In the first half, we struggled to impose our style and create many clear cut opportunities, but we adjusted well at half time, and the second-half performance demonstrated the resilience and quality within the squad.
“After going in 1-0 down I was really pleased with the reaction we showed. We wanted them to keep playing in the way we want to play and be patient.
"At half-time, we discussed areas where we could improve, and the players responded brilliantly.
“Their energy, determination, and focus were outstanding, and it was great to see them turn the game around with such a positive approach.
“Overall, I’m pleased with the effort and the way we executed the plan in the latter stages of the game.”
He added: “We are pleased to go into the quarter finals again this season. We went out on penalties at the same stage last year so we have set ourselves a target to go further this year.
“It’s a reward for the hard work of the players and staff. These cup games create a real buzz around the squad, and we’re excited to try and go further than last year.”
