Kai Whitmore | These winter block of fixtures are a big part of the season

Newport County midfielder Kai Whitmore is hopeful that the Exiles' draw with Grimsby Town last weekend can serve as the catalyst for a strong festive run of form.

The Exiles were denied their first win in five matches after a second-half penalty miss from Kyle Hudlin - their second in as many home league games.

Despite the draw, County took a lot of positives from match including securing their fifth clean sheet of the season and creating numerous goal scoring chances.

And Whitmore has his sights sets on more points as County enter a busy festive schedule.

“These winter block of fixtures are a big part of the season, so we’re looking ahead to that now,” said the midfielder.

“Last week against Grimsby, I thought we dominated large parts of the game, but we just need to work on those final pieces to turn draws into wins.

“Despite those draws, everyone is still feeling positive. We know these are just fine details. If we’d scored those two penalties, we’d obviously have an extra four points on the board and be in much better place higher up the table.

“Away from the penalty misses, there are still a lot of positives to take from the past two league games. Back-to-back clean sheets are a massive positive for the squad, and something we can definitely build on moving forward.”

He added: “I think it’s going well [the season] so far.

“Results have been a bit up and down of late, but we just need to take each game as it comes.

“We’re a talented group of players and we need to get that consistency right with our performances and results.”
