Newport County is delighted to announce the appointment of James Clarke as club captain and Aaron Wildig as team captain for the 2024-25 season.
Clarke, one of the Exiles’ most seasoned players, joined the club in June 2021 and has now been entrusted with the captain's armband by new head coach Nelson Jardim as the team prepares for the upcoming League Two campaign.
Clarke’s football journey began at Oxford United in 2007, with subsequent stints at Oxford City, Salisbury Town, and Woking, before moving to Walsall. His wealth of experience and leadership on and off the pitch have made him a pivotal figure at Rodney Parade.
In addition, the club is pleased to confirm that Aaron Wildig will take on the role of team captain for the season. The experienced midfielder, who began his career at Cardiff City, will lead the team on the pitch, while Clarke will manage responsibilities off it.
Since joining Newport County in June 2022 from Morecambe, Wildig has been a standout performer for the Exiles, netting eight goals in 73 appearances.
Commenting on the key appointments, Jardim said: “I’m really pleased to announce Aaron and Clarke as captains this season.
“I couldn’t ask for two better characters to help me both on and off the pitch going into the new season.
“The’ve got the experience and they have got the values that I want at this football club.
“Both players have been great over pre-season by welcoming the new lads in and are always available to help players who need support."
