Wales U21 head coach Matty Jones will be the special guest in the hospitality lounge for Newport County’s League Two clash with Crewe at Rodney Parade on Saturday (3pm).
The former Leeds, Leicester City and Wales midfielder will also present Exiles’ defender Matty Baker with his Welsh international cap on the pitch ahead of the game.
Baker, who has won six U21 caps, has been central to Wales’ impressive Uefa U21 Euro qualifying campaign with the young Dragons looking to make history at Rodney Parade on Friday, October 11, when they take on Czechia (5.30pm).
As it stands in Group I, Wales will automatically qualify for the finals in Slovakia as one of the three best group runners-up, but retaining this position could depend on results elsewhere. A draw against Czechia will guarantee a play-off place.
However, if they can win the group outright by beating Czechia and leaders Denmark, who are equal on points with Wales, slip up in their final game four days later against Iceland, Matty’s men will qualify automatically without the risk of having to compete in the play-offs.
“I’m really looking forward to playing again at Rodney Parade,’’ explained Jones. “The support we’ve had there in previous three games has been fantastic. It has grown with every game and it’s great to see the Red Wall buying in to what we are trying to do.
“We are building a good identity and following in Newport and the surrounding areas. Our success in the competition has helped because it has given us momentum which is a good position to be in.
“I’m sure Matt (Baker) will enjoy playing in front of such a partisan crowd. He’s been outstanding for me, the team and the country. We really believe in his ability; he’s technically gifted, composed and has a brilliant mentality.
“He got his reward by being called up to the senior squad for the first time last June for the friendlies against Gibraltar and Slovenia. It was a shame he didn’t win his first senior cap, but I’m sure if he keeps progressing there will be more opportunities to come over the years.’’
The U21 international will get under way at 5.30pm and falls on the same day as the senior squad take on Iceland in Reykjavík.
Supporters with a Cymru U21 match ticket will also be able to watch the senior international against Iceland afterwards on the screens at Rodney Parade.
