As Newport County get set to lock horns with Grimsby Town this weekend, we take a look at five players who have represented both clubs.
Bryn Morris

Bryn Morris joined Grimsby Town in July 2022 on a one-year deal and made an immediate impact. He played a key role in the Mariners' historic FA Cup run, helping them reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1939.
Morris featured as a second-half substitute in Grimsby’s 2-1 victory over Premier League Southampton, a result that secured their place in the competition’s last eight.
After his contract with Grimsby expired in June 2023, Morris signed a two-year deal with Newport County on 23 June 2023.
He made his debut for the Exiles on 5 August 2023, starting in the match against Accrington Stanley. Morris scored his first goal for Newport on 30 September 2023 in a 2-1 defeat to Salford City. One of his standout moments came in January 2024, when he netted a long-range strike in a 4-2 FA Cup fourth-round loss to Manchester United.
On 21 December 2024, Morris reached a career milestone by scoring his first professional hat-trick in a thrilling 6-3 win over Milton Keynes Dons.
Anthony Glennon

A current player at County who has represented the Mariners is Anthony Glennon. Born in Bootle, Merseyside, he joined Liverpool's academy at the age of six and spent over a decade progressing through the youth ranks.
After a loan spell with Grimsby Town, Glennon rejoined the Mariners permanently in June 2022, signing a two-year contract.
Glennon played a pivotal role in Grimsby’s memorable FA Cup run during the 2022-23 season, featuring for the full 90 minutes in their stunning 2-1 victory against Southampton. His impressive performances earned him a move to Newport County in the summer, where he signed a two-year contract.
Padraig Amond

Padraig Amond joined Grimsby Town on 1 July 2015, signing a one-year contract. Amond quickly became a fan favourite, scoring in his debut match against Kidderminster Harriers and bagging a brace in a 4-1 win over Bromley.
His career at Grimsby flourished as he netted a memorable hat-trick in a 7-0 victory over FC Halifax Town. His crucial contributions helped secure Grimsby’s promotion to the Football League after a 3-1 win over Forest Green Rovers in the 2016 play-off final, where he scored 30 goals in 40 appearances.
In May 2017, Amond made the move to Newport County, where he cemented his place as a club legend. His goalscoring feats included a memorable strike against Premier League Tottenham Hotspur in the 2017-18 FA Cup, as well as finishing as Newport's top scorer in the 2018-19 season with 24 goals across all competitions.
Amond continued to shine in key moments, including scoring crucial goals in FA Cup ties against Leicester City and playing an important role in Newport’s play-off final appearance in 2021.
Lenell John-Lewis

Lenell John-Lewis arrived at Grimsby Town in January 2013 on an 18-month contract and quickly became a key figure in the Mariners' attack.
His first goal for the club came in the final league match of the 2012-13 season against Woking, and he played a vital role in Grimsby’s promotion push. Notably, John-Lewis scored twice in an FA Cup match against Guiseley and helped Grimsby reach the play-off final in 2015.
In May 2015, John-Lewis moved to Newport County, where he scored his first goal for the Exiles in a 2-1 victory over Exeter City in October 2015. Unfortunately, injuries plagued his time at Newport, and John-Lewis missed a significant portion of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
Despite these setbacks, he made a crucial contribution on the final day of the 2016-17 season, winning a penalty that helped Newport secure their Football League status.
Paul Bignot

Paul Bignot joined Newport County in 2009 and immediately made an impact, helping the club win the Conference South title with a record-breaking 103 points during the 2009-10 season.
His standout performances earned him several individual awards, including Newport County Player of the Year, Players' Player of the Year, and a call-up to the England C national team.
After a brief spell at Grimsby Town in 2013, Bignot rejoined Newport County in 2016, where he played an important role in the club’s defensive unit. He made his Football League debut for the Exiles later that year and continued to contribute until his departure in 2017.
